Disclosed #16 is an evening with talks adressing ‘successful’ and ‘unsuccessful’ landscapes: in some areas all landscape elements seem to coincide and form a whole, but in other places the amount of elements do not create unity. What makes a landscape ‘good’?

Objects and designed situations in public space are often the spatial manifestations of processes and legislation. Within my work I frame these objects and through composing I create a new object or I bring together components from an object family, creating a new connections. In this way I use these objects to be able to respond precisely to their background and context. By isolating these objects, I also remove them from their environment: while the landscape as a whole, as a composition of natural and designed elements, also tells us a lot about those underlying processes. I am currently working on a research in which I continue my fascination with the public space and zoom out from the object to the design of the landscape.
In this research I focus on the coherence of the elements in a landscape, such as a slope, walkways, planted forests or sound barriers, and their sculptural qualities: by analyzing, imitating or manipulating these situations, I will re-examine them. How do natural elements relate to shaped elements? What is the connection between these elements and how is the landscape built up? What role do I play as an artist in a designed landscape, how does artistic autonomy relate to the end result, and what are the differences between intervening as an artist and an assignment situation? Can a functional landscape be an autonomous work of art?

About integrating various elements in the landscape into a coherent whole. ‘In the Victor Hugo Park a school building is integrated with a bicycle bridge. Bureau B + B worked closely with NEXT architects to forge all the different elements together in a coherent landscape. Bicycle riders go up and cross the school’s gym to cross the Amsterdam Rhine Canal. ‘

About the point in the landscape where everything comes together, but so often is separate from its environment. ‘The middle island of a roundabout is a piece of no man’s land, a vacuum in a crowded landscape, the eye of the storm. And that appears to cry for annexation, for identity, for interpretation and meaning. ‘

Infranature, landscape LANDSCAPE landscape is part of the public program DISCLOSED initiated by Het Wilde Weten. Het Wilde Weten consists of sixteen artist that have a studio in the former nunnery at the Robert Fruinstraat. Every six weeks one of the members hosts a public event that derives directly from their artistic practice. This results in lively series of talks, exhibitions, screenings, performances and more, disclosing the energy and pluriformity of the collective and creating public moments to meet and interact.
