Mirjam Linschooten is a visual artist living and working in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. Her multidisciplinary practice is concerned with the role of memory institutions in the construction of history, through forms of collecting, interpreting, and the aesthetics of display. The result is often a collaborative work which counterbalances how dominant institutions speak about our lives: a counter-archive, new additions to a museum collection, or a buried history made visible. Her work includes installation, publications, photography, writing and performance. At residency Het Wilde Weten she continues her research into the exhibition history of Amsterdam’s Tropenmuseum, and will edit a new experimental video, in collaboration with visual artist Sameer Farooq (Toronto, Canada), about the museum’s role in translating colonial collections into national narratives.
Mirjam completed an MA at the Dutch Art Institute (NL) and a BFA at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy (NL). Recent works include ‘Between You and Me,’ Cemeti Institute for Art and Society (2019); ‘The Elephant in the Room,’ Van Abbemuseum, Einhoven, Netherlands (2017), ‘White Steel Slice Mask’ (in collaboration with Sameer Farooq), Contemporary Art Gallery, Vancouver, Canada (2016). Mirjam was named a Fulbright Scholar and has been the recipient of Mondriaan Fund support and Prins Bernard Culture Fund.
