Artist Talk by: ELIZABETH ROWE (UK)
Thursday October 8 at 19.30 (please join us for a bite and a drink starting from 19:00)
Rowe makes work from material she accumulates. Things that are given to her, objects she finds in the streets or buys from 2nd hand shops, newspapers, magazines and free advertising. Through a range of processes such as cutting up, reassembling or drawing over, she attempts to control the mass of stuff she gathers and to edit her self into the work.
A video program curated by Nat Muller

This program brings together a selection of work which questions what happens when fiction or memory become a necessity to articulate place and situate it. Whether the sense of a site has been forcefully snatched away by war, displacement or aggressive real estate development or whether the artificiality of a place locates it as devoid of history and begs for a chronology to be constructed. The videos, though very different in aesthetics and approach, all reflect in a poetical fashion on issues of ownership, narrative appropriation, and remembrance. For indeed, who owns the stories of these specific (sub)urban sites, their past and their future? And who is allowed to tell?

In the context of the Talking About!-programme, Het Wilde Weten was asked to host Cameroon artists Goddy Leye (Artbakery) and Hervé Youmbi (Cercle Kapsiki) between September 14-17. During the first 3 days, the artists will visit 12 Rotterdam’ Artist Collectives, from the new and upcoming projectspaces, to the more established studiobuildings and residencies. Het Wilde Weten would like to introduce them to the different local cultural practises and organizational models of the contemporary artist collective, imbedded in a global context.
