Antoinette Nausikaa, 2012

‘My inspiration and motivation I find in our everyday environment, so often taken for granted and assumed as given. By observing the people, situations and events around me, I explore my relationship with these immediate surroundings. I work on projects in which I place myself in one specific location for longer periods of time, to be able to concentrate on and relate to a subject. The basis of the work consists of photographs, drawings, text and videos from which I later create publications and installations. In my work I try to show that ordinary life is nothing other than our Human Existence itself. Thus encouraging a unfamiliar fresh look at this world, to what is seemingly so obvious. By giving shape to universal curiosity, vulnerability, wonder and enchantment, but also to doubt, disruption and putting oneself in perspective.’

Antoinette Nausikaa (1973 NL) graduated from the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in 2004. In 2009 and 2010 she attended the Rijksacademy in Amsterdam. To develop her work she travelled to many places such as Tokyo Sumida-Ku, Madrid Parque de Las Tetas, Xiamen CCA, Shizuoka Mt Fuji, New York Bronx and the Meetfactory in Prague.
Antoinette’s work has been exhibited nationally and internationally in museums and art spaces such as Kunstraum Dusseldorf, Kunstschloss Ringenberg, Meetfactory Prague, Photography Museum Huis Marseille Amsterdam. Her works are present in collections such as DNB (Dutch Central Bank), Huis Marseille Museum of Photography and LUMC Leiden amongst others.

Antoinette was artist in residence at Het Wilde Weten from August until December 2012.
