True Value
A value that would be obtained in an ideal system. An ideal system is one that would have no errors at all. In other words, this is a value that is perfectly accurate. Strictly speaking, the ‘true value’ is hypothetical – no such thing can actually exist.
For this edition of Disclosed Annette Behrens takes her ongoing visual research of the soybean as a starting point to explore different perspectives concerning the plant. Through food, industrial products, medication or cosmetics the soybean is closely interwoven into virtually every aspect of our daily lives yet invisible to most of us.
Our knowledge of this legume is largely gained through images and information presented in the media, by NGO’s or often simply hearsay. The same, ever repeating images of, for instance, the tropical deforestation are part of our collective image library. By looking at the development and the use of the plant throughout the past, roughly, 150 years a complex system of interdependency, economics, history, environmental problems and different values can be revealed and questioned.
For this event different aspects of the soybean are examined through photography, video, text, spoken word and meal tastings. A selection of soybean related dishes with their own stories from China, Indonesia, India and Japan will be offered by The Hague’s Keukenverhalen in collaboration with graphic designer Romana Siemons. Rotterdam based spoken word artist Mariana Hirschfeld will perform a tekst written especially for this occasion.
Saturday at 8p.m. and Sunday at 2p.m. a maximum of 30 participants can join the tasting of Keukenverhalen’s meals and Mariana Hirschfeld’s performance, please register at: info@annettebehrens.com
The exhibition space is open for everyone afterwards at 9.30p.m. (Saturday) and 3.30p.m. (Sunday). Please note that the event will be partially Dutch and English.
The evening is free of charge, drinks at your own expense.
True Value is part of the public program DISCLOSED initiated by Het Wilde Weten. Het Wilde Weten consists of sixteen artist that have a studio in the former nunnery at the Robert Fruinstraat. Every six weeks one of the members hosts a public event that derives directly from their artistic practice. This results in lively series of talks, exhibitions, screenings, performances and more, disclosing the energy and pluriformity of the collective and creating public moments to meet and interact.
Special thanks goes to Team Thursday for the poster design.
